for some reason they hadn't received my email. But once I resent it, I got a response within a an hour or so. In case others experience the same issues and are looking for a fix, here's what they said (I've not yet tried the suggested fix):
----For the text messages, this sounds like a firewall issue. Go into BB
options / security options then firewall. Make sure it's Disabled. Then
press Menu then Reset. Press menu again then Save. Then pop the battery to
reboot.
For the speeddials, a contact must have an email address on old BB OS
