Endless boot cycle

I tried to update my Alltel Pearl 8130 software from 4.3.0.81 to 4.3.0.149, followed by a download of the Epocrates Rx Pro software from the browser upon completion of the download, after which the 8130 repeatedly tried to boot, then switched off...over and over again. It never completes the boot cycle, and the Alltel folks tell me that the 8130 is now useless and unrepairable. Are they right? Pulling the battery and replacing it do nothing. They're shipping me a new (refurbished) 8130 next week, but I can't believe a software problem can make my 8130 absolutely useless.
