Question 8820 Wi-Fi access help

Please Login to Remove!

I am a new owner of a model 8820, unlocked & version 4.5.0.182. My service is T-Mobile, Pay as You Go plan. No data plan.

I have a problem with some apps and web access. I have the BB set up correctly for Wi-Fi. Some apps like The Weather Channel access data just fine. I’m not sure how it gets data as it works in areas with no Wi-Fi coverage.

Other apps like CNN will not work. Most apps seem to require the data plan. I understand that but why can’t Wi-Fi be the default for data access? Simply put, if there is no Wi-Fi, I don’t need the data.

I also can’t seem to get GPS to function on this BB. I have an external Bluetooth GPS unit that pairs up fine. However, the apps cannot connect when requested.

What am I missing here? My settings ‘seem’ to check okay but there must be more. Any helpful ideas?

Blackberries require a BLACKBERRY data plan to function correctly.
This applies to alot of applications also.
They simply won't function without the data plan, regardless of whether or not you have wi-fi.

A BB isn't like a normal PDA or smartphone. It requires a BB data plan and the proper service books from your carrier and from RIM to function properly.

Check out our FAQ for two articles, one using the BB with a generic data plan and the other on What do you need a data plan for.
