Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
Well, this is how I got around the BB Link/Win10 problem. I installed BB Link into my Toshiba Netbook which has OS "Win 7 Starter" and now BB Link works just fine.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I would think it may be a combination of the OS10 update and newer pc OS incompatibility. Older win 7 generally was fully supported by Blackberry.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I don't pretend to understand this, but I am able to backup my BB in BB link with W10 OS. The success seems to have something to do with BB Blend having been activated. And once done, it is repeatable until the pc is rebooted. This is the initial sequence. I connected my BB by USB cable, and BB Link opened automatically. As I was signing in, BB Blend opened, but after a short time BB Blend said "The connection has been lost .... but when I clicked out of BB Blend, BB Link was still connected and continuing with a successful backup. I tried another backup without changing anything, and it worked. Once successful, I think it will work even if BB Blend is closed (until the pc is rebooted).

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I gave it a try--attempted to backup with BlackBerry Blend running--and it didn't make any difference for me. Same behavior and same error as always. (The backup seems to proceed, with Link showing that it is calculating space, etc., but then Link throws the error, "Backup did not complete, verify that your device is connected to BlackBerry Link and try again."
It's hard to know what's going on in your case. If you can find something that works (even it doesn't make sense) then go with it so long as it works. Still, though, knowing you can't count on it (when time comes, you may not be able to restore) means you should have an alternate solution just in case.

It must be a random thing. I couldn't make the same procedure work this morning after several attempts. Errors are exactly the same as yours.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
Well, the intermittency is the surprise to me in this case. Everything else in Link works for me but backup, and always the same error. The only exception (for me) was when I turned off encryption, then backup worked, and then started failing again once I enabled encryption again. The failure is consistent.
However, as I say, I think the big picture is the unreliability (or undependability) at this point. Even if you find that spinning on your heals three times and saying BlackBerry loves me make it work, you could get to the time you need to restore and find that restore doesn't work know matter how many times you spin on your heals and say BlackBerry loves me.
Best have a backup plan to the backup plan.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I posted in another thread the issues I had with trying to restore a backup after for some reason my Z10 locked up. I had backups and not one would work with LINK. I checked a few support sites and found an application that would allow you to hack the backup made by the LINK program which is encrypted. Based on this this thread the problems seem to be a combination of new OS update on both the PC's and blackberry's
If as suggested by aiharkness, have a plan for the backup plan.
I used a hack tool called RAR Knife to pull some contacts from the backup but none of the photos were saved.
I found this on the internet in forums that were exploding with backup complaints about the new BB OS update.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
OK. I found it in Settings/Security and Privacy. It was "off" anyway, so that avenue is closed.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I don't think that setting refers to the backup file. Mine is off also and the file is still encrypted.

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
OK. Then back to my original question (to Ira). How do you turn off/disable encryption (as you mentioned in your post, above)

Re: BB Classic Latest OS Update Problems
I addressed device encryption settings in post #10.
The device encryption is independent of backup encryption by Link.
I don't believe there is an option in Link to backup without Link encrypting the backup file (regardless of the device encryption setting). That is, so far as I know, Link encrypts by default with no option to turn off encryption of the backup file.
(As I recall, the old BBOS desktop software did have an encryption option for the backup file. I remember looking for such a switch in Link when I first switched to BB10 and not finding one.)
