Default 1 Drop and my 8700 is toast

Please Login to Remove!

I AM ABSOLUTELY PISSED OFF TO THE UTMOST OF PISSTIVITY.... I'VE ONLY HAD IT FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS... I DROP IT ONCE ON MY KITCHEN FLOOR AND IT'S DONE FOR!!! IT COULDN'T SURVIVE JUST 1 DROP.... PATHETIC!!!

Ok... thanks for letting me get that off of my chest. Now, to get a replacement. How do I proceed? I purchased the 8700 from a Cingular Store and then switched to T-mobile. There should be a warranty on this, right? I shouldn't have a problem getting a new one right? How should I proceed?

I AM ABSOLUTELY STUNNED BY THIS!!! ABSOLUTELY STUNNED!!!

UMMM..... the drop isnt covered under warranty. You can try and have it replaced (not telling them it dropped). But if they dont go for it, then your stuck buying one retail.

Check our Buy, Sell, Trade subforum for anybody selling an 8700c.

Knock on wood but I've dropped mine plenty of times since November and it's still running like a champ. Several times on hardwood floors, carpet, deck, and most recently out of a cab in Boston. It's scratched up pretty good on the sides but the screen is still perfect.

I would try taking it back to Cingular and see if they can do anything for you. Outside of that, is it salvageable? Is it just the screen or are the internals messed up? I thought there was another thread that mentioned $150 to fix a broken BB.

Same here. I've got a few knicks here and there but nothing on the screen and it's still working perfectly.

The screen is not cracked. Actually it seems as though it is damaged internally. I just couldn't believe it. I'll try going back to the Cingular store that I purchased the BB from. I'm not sure, but I thought that I bought their Insurance.

Has anyone bought a BB from Cingular and purchased their Insurance, and got a new BB because of a drop?

I just thought of some questions:

1. If Cingular gives me a new BB, will they unlock it? I'm with T-Mobile

2. When I upgraded to OS .284, I remember the software doing a backup. Where is the backed up data, and how do I view it on my PC?

3. If I'm just completely SOL, and have to shell out more major cash, where should I buy, and can I buy it new and already unlocked?

4. I can see nothing on my screen. It's just ALL white with a crack line underneath the glass screen. How do I delete my data from the BB? ... ie getting it back to "factory". Since I can't see or navigate to anything, I'm unable to do:
options------security options-----general settings-----track wheel click-----wipe handheld

Usually I buy the Insurance with Electronic devices. If for some reason, I didn't in this case, I will make sure that I'm covered as best I can the next time around. What a lesson this is going to be, if I have no Insurance....

If you bought it straight but, retail price, then you can try to call international business line to get it unlocked. Search for unlocking, there are many threads.

2. When I upgraded to OS .284, I remember the software doing a backup. Where is the backed up data, and how do I view it on my PC?

The upgrade process only backs it up temporarily and then copies it back. It is not stored on the computer permanently. Correct me if I am wrong.

3. If I'm just completely SOL, and have to shell out more major cash, where should I buy, and can I buy it new and already unlocked?

You can buy it straight up from a store again and get one of the places like gsmsource to unlock it for you.

4. I can see nothing on my screen. It's just ALL white with a crack line underneath the glass screen. How do I delete my data from the BB? ... ie getting it back to "factory". Since I can't see or navigate to anything, I'm unable to do:

You probably won't be able to wipe it without being able to see the screen. There is no master reset button that erase everything.

Usually I buy the Insurance with Electronic devices. If for some reason, I didn't in this case, I will make sure that I'm covered as best I can the next time around. What a lesson this is going to be, if I have no Insurance....

Chances are good you don't have insurance because cingular does not offer insurance on their pda phones. However, I have heard that they are pretty liberal about warrranties. There is a thread here where someone cracked their screen and got it replaced no problems. Do a search for cracked screen. In the future, buy the phone with a credit card that offers theft and loss protection, like American Express.
