Please Login to Remove!

I've just inherited a BES - I've never used blackberry before so I'm more than a little green.

I want to completely wipe a device, set up a new user account and reassign the device here. Whats the best way to do this?

Welcome to the forums! Nothing like jumping in with both feet - do you have a life preserver?

To wipe a device, click on the Options icon, then Security Options, then General Settings. From there either click the wheel or press the Menu key (left of trackball) and click Wipe Handheld. Follow the instructions. This will remove only data and leave the OS intact.

On the BES, right click in the user list and select Add User. Add the user from the list.

Or, if you have access to a machine with BB Manager and a USB cable, you can do it that way.

Plug in the device to the machine with BB Manager. Go to Local ports, right-click on the device and choose "Wipe Handheld." Wait patiently for this to finish.

Next, add the user as juwaack says, then right-click on the user and choose "Assign Device." Pick the device attached with the USB cable and away you go.

You can also activate over the air (OTA) by assigning a password and activating from the handheld - useful for remote users.

As a new BES admin, I highly recommend you spend some time reading on Blackberry.com/support and doing searches here. Also, check out the FAQ site.

Right, I've done that but when I plug the device into the server the server can't see it - it's saying theres no present. I think the service books on the device are from a different computer could tis be causing the problem?

First, I recommend that you load BB Manager on your workstation and work from there rather than on the server, but that is up to you.

Here's a result from a search for your error message on blackberry.com - BlackBerry Search Results

Couple things you should have set up first. This is how I do it, you may get different responses from different members.

1. Download the OS for your device. http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-...ry-device.html

2. download desktop software. You can get this on the blackberry site.

3 install both on a separate computer. (not the BES)

4 plug into BES and choose to do a wipe device. (this will remove everything including OS)

5 unplug, wait 30 secs than pull battery and replace.

6 on the desktop with the software installed, goto c:\program files\common files\Research in Motion\Apploader\ Rename the Vendor.xml file to vendor.old.

7 start the desktop software

8 it will ask you if you would like to update/install.

Good Luck

A wipe will NOT remove the OS. You need to do a "Nuke Device" to remove the OS.
