I'm having trouble configuring a playlist and getting sync to recognize it.

It cannot include any songs that have DRM protection. Songs purchased have to be from the iTunes plus store or songs ripped from your own CDs

I take it Limewire is a nono ?

You have to import the songs into itunes, then add them to a playlist. Then expand the tab at the bottom of mediasync to select the playlist. Then hit sync and it will take a long time to sync. Also album art that you download via iTunes "get album art" does not transfer. Of course I am sure these songs are legally obtained.
