Completely agree. One of the reasons for that design is that you place the device flat on the table and use it as a speakerphone because the sound won't be muffled. It comes out the top. Very poor design, that with the extremely low vibrate makes the phone unusable

The keypad dilema continues. Based on some of the feedback here, what we want is a small handset with QWERTY, but a keypad that isn't cramped. Just goes to show that a diverse product lineup is proably the best way to make the most people happy.

How can RIM let this happen? I mean, don't they even test these devices after they design them? Certainly they must know that low speaker and vibrate/ring isn't going to work.

Yes, they know. They also know the other tens of thousands of design decisions made that makes the blackberry what it is. Trust me , they know why they made that decision and they stand by it.

Unless RIM is really listening to us, this is going to bomb with the design flaws of the 8100. Poor volume, low vibrate and too small - one can only hope that the raised profile on Voda will be enough to overcome the 'small' flaw. RIM needs to address the others.
Man am I happy I went with the 8700

Looks pretty sweet but the lack of the scroll wheel kinda sucks. I have been playing with a friends Pearl and I really don't like the scroll ball. No tacktile feedback. You don't know if you're going fast or slowly and such. We'll see.

If it's like the Pearl, then the speaker is on top of the phone. Speaker phone works pretty good if you have the phone lying on a table or something.

You know, the lack of a scroll wheel is my big gripe as well. I remember loving the jog-dial on my old Sony PDA and was glad the BB used it as well. Plus the fact that it was on the side and felt natural in hold hand scrolling, makes a huge difference. Holding the BB only at the bottom while using the scroll isn't natural and feels like my thumb would cramp. Again, haven't tried the Pearl yet.

I asked the same question, and from what I have heard it will be EDGE only..... which kind of sucks...... but from what I have heard, they are not getting the HSDPA radios from the radio manfactures... (sory my spelling sucks)
I could be very wrong, but thats what I have heard...

I don't think you are totally correct, Boy Genius. If you have an unlocked GSM phone it will work, in theory, with any GSM carrier, such as Cingular or T-Mobile. It will not work on CDMA carriers such as Verizon and Sprint/Nextel. I don't think any US phone will work in Japan or China. I think GSM will work in Europe.
I say in theory because it is really up to the carrier to allow the device on their network. I have heard that Sprint will only allow their own branded phones to operate on their network. I do not think Cingular and T-Mo are of that same opionion, however.
