OK:

Have daughters 9780 in for repair. I did a full back up on the 9780 and loaded said backup onto a spare and working fine BOLD 9000.

I could not find BBM icon anywhere on home screen or in DL folder or apps. connected unit to laptop and loaded BBHome. Went to apps and see it is in fact installed. Re-booted twice..no joy. Also went to Add on apps on the bold 9000 and it shows BM is in fact installed there as well.

what am I doing wrong here.?

You probably need to swap the 9780 with the 9000 in BIS.

Do other data functions (like push email, native web browser) work on the new unit?

There was an issue not long ago where the BBM icon disappeared inexplicably. The fix was to reinstall it from RIM's site: BlackBerry - Messenger - BBM an Instant Messaging App
