Is BB IM Private
Please Login to Remove!
I have an 8330 on Verizon at work. I don't know if you call it "BES" or not, but they use some sort of BB enterprise software to sync or devices with our GroupWise calendars and GroupWise email accounts. I use BB IM a lot as many of my friends and family have BBs. So the question is, how private are the messages being sent? I send things to friends via IM that are not the sort of things I'd send via my work email account (tasteless jokes, bad languages, etc.). I'm wording if any of this stuff is being archived, etc.
Just curious. I've done nothing too terrible but have been taking some liberties I wouldn't with a work email account. Do I need to clean up my language? ;)

I would clean it up, it's never necessary, is it?
But yes, if your BES Admin has BBMessenger logged, they can view your chats. If they want to turn on that logging feature, AND if they wanted to view your chats.
It's up to you to determine if they have that logging feature enabled on the BES.

Here is a thread about what can and cannot be seen by BES.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/bes-...-info-bes.html
My advice is if you have to worry about it, then don't say it. And always think whatever you do connected to BES can and will be looked at. Can't go wrong that way.

In my company the BB is monitored and if you wander out of business use it's a corporate code of conduct violation. I don't need to tell you where that leads.

Don't do anything to risk your job. A stupid joke is never worth it.

The only way the BES Admins can view the BBMessenger chats is to enable the monitoring of it on the BES. IIRC, the way it works is that the chats are emailed back to them. So, you would know if they were being monitored as you would have emails regarding it. Most BES Admins don't enable this feature. HOWEVER, PIN's and SMS, and obviously emails CAN be monitored easily without your knowledge.
But as posted above, I still wouldn't do anything on your work BlackBerry that would go against any company policy.

This is accurate, and means that the BB user would see the record of the chat being emailed to the Admin in their Sent Items folder.

Thank you all very much for the info. I don't think BB IM is being monitored at work. I've never gotten an email suggesting it (as described above).
Not that anyone would care (no one here knows me personally), but I've never done anything too terrible or off color. My assumption was always that it could be seen, though I doubted anyone was monitoring it. The advice to "keep it professional" will be taken. If I want to be myself with friends and family on a company-issued device, I'll make sure it's just via a phone call. ;)
Thanks.

You have wisdom beyond your years. If everyone followed your lead here a TON of ugly workplace situations could be avoided.

Go back up to post #3 above and click on the link Dubdub posted.....it tells what can and cannot be tracked.
