Default Stand by button problem

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Blackberry tour. I had to get it replaced because the track ball on the original was broken. When I put the replacement into stand by mode the thing still rings. That is a problem for me. Is there a setting messed up on the new phone? I can't find any place to configure what the stand by button does. The phone says it is going into standby, but it is not silenced as expected.

Standby puts the device into a low powered state.
It does NOT stop the phone from ringing.

Yeah, the "standby" mode has NEVER worked that way. And don't worry, when you update the device OS to the latest Verizon version, the functionality of pressing the Mute button to put the device into standby mode is eliminated completely anyway.

Then how the heck do I easily mute the phone for meetings without having to go into the settings? Every other businesss oriented smart phone has a dedicated button/switch for this.

Try pressing and holding the Q key. It should put the device into vibrate mode. To change it back to normal, do the same again.

You don't need to go into settings. Just change the profile.

Assign a convenience key to open profiles and set the mode.

Assign an application to a Convenience key
Your BlackBerry® device has one or more Convenience key on the side of the device. Depending on your theme, you might not be able to
change the application that is assigned to a Convenience key.
1. On the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
2. Click Screen/Keyboard.
3. Change the Right Side Convenience Key Opens or Left Side Convenience Key Opens fields.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.

Convenience key only allows me to map "normal" sound mode. The "Q" key works, but the phone still vibrates when emails come in. I'd like all alerts shut off. Phone doesn't seem to allow me to edit what happens in the various sound configurations and I can't figure out how to map a key or button to a custom sound profile. Any ideas here?

Unless your blackberry works differently than every one I've ever used, then you most certainly CAN edit "what happens in the various sound configurations".

Exact sequence may vary by OS but should be similar IIRC. I am on 5.0.0.662 and am using a Tour

Select Profile icon. Scroll to bottom of list for Edit Profiles. Select the profile you want to change. (Choices on mine are Normal, Loud, Medium, Vibrate Only, Silent, Phone Calls Only, All Alerts Off. ) Options exist for which ring tone you want, volume (includes silent as an option), LED, and Vibration.

Cannot Edit All Alerts Off but that sounds like what you are looking for. I haven't had reason to try this option but see if it doesn't do what you are looking for without having to edit the others. If you don't have this option, you may want to try updating OS.

(By the way. Thanks for forcing me to look at the menus to write this up. Just noticed option for "Set contact Alerts" which will allow me to set or remove the ring tones for individual contacts without having to go into individual contacts and edit.)

I don't have edit profiles on my tour. How do I see the OS I am on and then how do I update?

Do you know how to get to your profiles? And you scrolled all the way to the bottom of the list and there is no edit? What exactly is showing in your list?

To find out your OS, Select Options (the icon that looks like a wrench), About. Your OS version will be listed as something like v5.0.0.662.

To update, you to to the sticky at the top of the Tour forum (General 9600 Series Discussion - Tour - BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community). Look for the sticky titled "Latest OS: 9630......" and follow the instructions exactly as written to the letter. Latest official is .624. (.662 which I have is a beta.)

My version seems to be v4.7.1.61. This is a Verizon phone. Platform stated as 4.1.0.81

In my profits screen (get there by clicking on the speaker at the top of my home screen) I see "Set Ring Tons/Alerts", Set Contact Alerts" and "Custom Profiles".
