enterprise activation problem
Please Login to Remove!
hi could someone please give me some advice.
none of the blackberries in my company will synch OTA through EA anymore. nothing was changed on the BES and for the past 3 weeks no activation will go through. stage 1 of enterprise activation goes through fine but it keeps crashing during stage 2. sometimes the device will sycnh the calendar and then die or other times it will get to "email address has now been enabled" and then stop. no errors come up the process just stops and i have left devices for hours and nothing else happens. i am running version 4.1.0.38 of the BES. i have gone through the kb articles here
BlackBerry Search Results
but have had no joy yet. i have looked through the various logs on the bes but im not sure exactly what to be looking for in there.

OK, lets take this one step at a time:
1. Check your SPAM filter for flagging of the ETP messages
2. Check your AV for flagging of .DAT files (these must be allowed)
3. You're running 4.1.0, so you could (should) service pack this installation up to SP4 (you can go straight to this version as service packs are cumulative).
4. What's your ping time between BES and Exchange server(s)? You don't want to be south of 100 MS.
Aside from this please let us know what mail server version you're running.

1. no sign of the ETP messages
2. pretty sure .dat files are allowed but i will double check
3. will do this now
4. ping time is around 5ms
running Exchange 5.5
forgot to mention that synching works fine going through desktop manager
thanks for the advice.

ok while waiting for the service pack i have noticed 2 different versions of cdo.dll are registered and as far as i know this could be causing a problem
my exchange server is running version 6.5.7651.61
the bes is running 6.5.6944.0
so should i move the exchange version to the bes and re-register

Go with the most recent version - both should be the same. Copy the Exchange one to the BES and then register it using regsvr32

If the ETP mesage is being orphaned in the mailbox and not deleting it wither means that the DAT file is being striped or altered by your AV or, more likely, the BESAdmin doesn't have enough mailbox rights for the users. Check my pre-requisites thread here to double check your permissions:

ok thats all sorted now with the ept messages but i have attempted the upgrade to 4.1.4 and get an error "db upgrade failed. error executing sql statement"
would this be the cause of the issues, a corrupt db entry or something. here is the install log

Hmm!
Hmm, looks like everyone here got stumped by that one!
I'm having the same issue, though not after an upgrade of the BES server, just in day-to-day stuff. I'm going through the DBCC CHECKDB command syntax for MS SQL Server right now, and it looks like I'll have to do a repair_allow_data_loss command...
...OK, back. So I logged into my SQL Server 2005 box and went into Enterprise Manager. I put the database into single user mode, then deselected the DB and quit Enterprise Manager. I then verified it was in single user mode with sp_who2, repaired the database with DBCC CHECKDB ('BESMgmt', REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS), finding 42 errors, verified it was okay with DBCC CHECKDB ('BESMgmt'), and now I'm looking at ways to verify it "much more better."
...Looks like I could have used the DATA_PURITY option, but I'd prefer a 'lightest touch' approach to this. Now to take it online...
...it's up and running nicely now. No more crazy errors on the SQL box, either! Haven't tried an Enterprise Activation on a handheld yet, but we will see in the next week or so.
Hope this info is helpful to someone.

After working on a users device, I am unable to get it to preform an Enterprise Activation. I have even set the EA password to "a" as opposed to my usual "1234" and I get the following error. (please see attachment.) This error pops up almost immediately after attempting to activate his device. However, he is not the only user this is happening to. As u can see, I cannot see the whole error here. I'm thinking this could be a database problem, but I'm not the DB guy here.
BES INFO
4.1.2
SQL Database
EXCHANGE 03 SP2
I'M NOTICING THIS ERROR QUITE A BIT IN THE EVENT LOGS AS WELL:
[DEVICE_SESSION:32C5F9B6:00f02b78] Service authentication verify failed. Error: 1 Service: S3865****

Ok, so I take the exact same user and test an EA on a device I know that works... and it does a flawless EA right in front of me. Also, his previous device (before my test device) says that it completes and EA, but when he tries to send an email he gets the "Message Service Blocked". I'm pretty sure that that error has nothing to do with the BES, thus leading me to believe that somebody does not know what they are doing on my providers end.

Contact your carrier and have them remove any BlackBerry plan from the account and re-add it to make sure there is a proper BES plan on the HH.

Ok, I have found out what the problem is/was!!! Sprint made a horrible accusation that it was something on my BES server denying the handheld, when in fact neither of these devices were programmed correctly on Sprint's "BackEnd".. (If I had a dollar for every time they mentioned "BackEnd" I would be rich!) However this issue finally occurred on one my fellow Techs devices; thus giving me a little more faith in blackberry terminology.
I had him actually do a Diagnostic on the device (8830 FYI), and everything passed but PIN TO PIN. So I had him call Sprint and inform them that he could not send nor receive PIN messages, and not to get off the phone with them until he could.
After they fixed the "BackEnd" issue on his device, wouldn't you know it... EA's all over the place.. This has definitely been a learning experience and I hope that this helps somebody down the road.
