Can anybody tell me how I can free up some memory on a handheld (7290 or 7100)

Uninstall any third party programs you aren't using.
Periodically pop out the battery to free up memory - but as you reload programs it will get used.

There is a content compression system, built in, but I don't use it.

Compression is ore like to use with secutiry feature because every time you unlock the BB it will uncompress the data before you could use it, so it could take couple of extra seconds before the data is ready for you to use.
ALT_LGLG and then clean the log will definately free up memory and so does while browsing Options->Clear Cache will help you..

What are the memory numbers in status actually telling me?

What is File Total and File Free and am i really down to 286k of space? I don't have that much installed. I flushed the log (no pun intended) and dumped the cache (Is this a perfomance killer if i visit the same sites often?) and I saw virtually no increase. After a battery out/in I now have 1.8mb showing free. Isn't there a utility that can do this without taking the device down and pulling the battery? From a system design perspective that's a bit weak (i.e. Thank you for calling OnStar...we need you to pull your truck off the highway, shut off the engine and disconnect/reconnect the battery).

Any help in understanding this is appreciated.

In addition I looked at the numbers again right after restart(the 1.8mb value) and then again after I enabled the radio. The Free number dropped to 1.34mb almost immediately.
