Ok, so got a 9700, and I see those Verizon ads dissing AT&T's 3g coverage, and the response that AT&T has coverage in the other areas but on Edge 2g. So question is, does the 9700 work in areas where there's only 2g?

Ahh - there's a map for that.

No carrier has 3G coverage "everywhere". Not even Verizon (case in point - my sister lives in a valley - no carrier coverage from anyone).

The 9700 will switch to EDGE (and even down further to GPRS) but will try and maintain a data signal.
