Maybe someone can help me out here. Why is it that none of these files are ever distributed via torrents? It's the perfect mechanism for exactly this sort of situation.
some extra free memory and for everybody that was *****ing about the keypad lock, youll be happy to know that it now works quite differently:
the lock button *immediately* dims the screen and locks the keypad. pressing the lock button or the scroll wheel is the *only* way to get the phone to come back out of slumber.... and all you will get is a msg that says you need to press the lock button to unlock the phone.
now *im* pissed because that button used to make it go to a password lock.
Laaaame.
Hey RIM! why dont you let users have a choice in what the lock button does... just like you already let us chose what the right and left convenience keys do.
Yeah, the keyboard lock function changes from version to version are kind of strange. I'm used to lock requiring a password from being on BES for years. Now that I'm on BIS I'd like to make my own policy as well. Seems like some want keylock simply to prevent accidental key pressing, where others really want security. I noticed any numeric key or menu key will light up the screen to show the phone is locked.
One nice thing for me on this release is not having to use single profile scanning for wi-fi to connect.
I was having some problems when first running each app the first time (saw terrible lag times), but after firing up each program and rebooting a couple of times everything seems to run well.

..
My wi-fi connection is the pits with this release and I've tried single profile scanning on and off with no difference. Most of the time it won't connect to UMA -- I'm currently stuck on EDGE while sitting five feet from my wireless modem.
I've been running this version since the link was posted here. I don't see much change from .461 except for the keyboard lock issue already mentioned...and improved UMA call quality. I know that others weren't having difficulties with previous builds, but I was. I had a few test calls today and they were fine.
Also, my available memory after a reboot jumped from 118 MB to 130 MB, so there's been some optimization.
Concerning keyboard lock...
The 'K' keyboard shortcut is still gone, and its exact functionality is gone. Pressing 'K' (with dialing from home screen turned off, of course) used to lock the keyboard, and nothing more. It didn't dim the screen. If a password was set, pressing any key would commence password input.
In .461, the 'K' shortcut went away, and you had to use the left shoulder lock button to do it, and it would only work with a password set. And you had to use the lock button to unlock too. Or you could use the lock icon from the home screen to lock.
In .509, the left shoulder button now locks, regardless of whether a password is set, and it also dims the screen. The lock icon does the same. But hitting any key commences the password input sequence, as it did prior to .461, so you don't have to use the shoulder lock button to unlock anymore. This is a Good Thing.
I'd still like the 'K' shortcut back, but fortuitously, there's a new version of QuickLaunch available, that allows the user to use <space> from the home screen to launch QuickLaunch. Then I assigned the lock function to 'K' so that from the home screen <space>K locks the keyboard and dims the screen. I can live with that. I don't like having to use that left shoulder button all the time, and I think doing so caused a crack (I have a thread in the 8900 forum about that).
Why would RIM disable the standby button? Someone suggested the lock and standby functions were now combined, but withe the speed my battery is depleted, I'm thinking the left top key just locks it. Bring back the standby, please.

I agree. I was accustomed to the right shoulder standby mode. Wish it was still there.
Something strange going on with the lock shoulder key. Up till now, it was locking as described in earlier posts. Right now it seems to simply blank the screen (no lock or standby). Strange things going on here with all these changes from release to release...
