Has anybody tried to upgrade their phone OS via the online feature instead of the more traditional way of installing the OS on the computer and then the phone?

Any downsides to doing it online?

I remember in my early days on the forum I learned that sometimes you can add an app thru BB DM's app loader because you don't have the device OS installed on the computer.

If I do the online upgrade, and they say the OS isn't installed onto the computer, will I still run into the same problem?

Seems convenient not having the device OS on the computer since it doesn't do much else.

The downside as I see it is there would be no backup made if it crashed. If you always have a current backup, then you might be OK. If not, need to think before crashing, err I mean trying it out.

Well, installing the device software on your computer doesn't really clutter your computer like some apps... as mentioned the device OS serves a simple purpose and nothing else, but it won't harm/clutter up anything.

Can we run threw JL_CMDer from the online upgrade?

Just so I understand better, if the device OS file is 85mb, does all of that get saved onto the computer, or are there like some temp files that are needed just for the backup and discarded once the upgrade is complete?

I'm not aware of any Temp files the device OS installs. I would not be suprised if their are some somewhere.. (as that is very common for any installed program)

Going to Start -> Run (Or hold the Windows Key and press the Letter "R") and type in the word "Temp" that will bring up your temp directory and you can delete all the contents.. usually without worry.

So what exactly gets installed on the computer with the device OS? It's not the DM since that's a separate file, and the OS itself is only a few megabytes, otherwise our devices will have next to no memory left after an upgrade.

Without picking apart the executable it installs the follwing directory:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\%Device OS Version%

The directories typically seem to be about 55 MB.. The contents of the "JAVA" folder are the only contents that seem to be loaded on the BlackBerry and typically not all those contents are loaded because we can pick and choose what we want from threw the App Loader.

The ALX files just tell the App Loader what COD's to load for each program and provides the description information of the application. Which is why we have to delete the DocumentsToGo.ALX file or else it will delete SheetsToGo.cod/etc because it is not in the ALX file if someone wants to take the time and add the COD file names to the ALX file then it would probably fix the issue. You can go as far to edit the ALX file and remove the extra languages so they are not loaded to begin with.

I also have a 13 MB CDMA folder not too sure what that does.
