Have seen lots of my friends with names written in funny fonts and characters. wonder how does one write his/her name and how to create one.

Other than the smilies on the SMS you can add there is no way to change the fonts. It may be possible on other cell phones. do your friends have blackberry's? Possibly they have a App for a different text program.
check the internet for one or Appworld.
