Default Blackberry Professional Express Problems

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there,

I got an 8900 Curve on Friday (my provider is Orange UK) and as per the suggestion on my post 176031. I have installed Blackberry Professional Express.

Just a summary of my setup:

SVR1 - Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 (SP2) and MS SQL Server Express 2005

I decided to install the blackberry server (with DB on SVR1) on a separate server so installed it on a Windows 2003 Server VM. I followed the official Blackberry installation instructions on their site.

My problem is I am unable to activate a device using wireless. If I add a new user (using the wizard) an activation password is sent to my mailbox. Then when I go to Enterprise Activation on my 8900, I enter the email address for that user and the password and select Activate. It then just sits trying to activate, constantly retrying and nothing happens.

On a previous attempt I managed to get it activated using the Desktop Manager. The blackberry device shows correctly on the bb server but I am unable to send and receive emails on the device unless connected to the desktop manager (in which case I presume the desktop redirection kicks in). Certainly when I try and compose an email on the device it says "Send using: Desktop" (not sure if this matters).

So I did some more research and found the problems caused by different versions of MAPI32.dll and CDO.dll. Since I used my SBS disc to install the Exchange tools on my bb server, I had not upgraded to SP2 like my main exchange so these versions were different. So I upgraded and confirm from the MAGT log that these are now correct:

Code:
[30000] (02/15 09:56:40.545):{0x126C} [ENV] MAPI32.DLL: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MAPI32.dll, Version: 6.5.7638.1
[30000] (02/15 09:56:40.545):{0x126C} [ENV] CDO.DLL: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\cdo.dll, Version: 6.5.7651.61
I believe I have opened the correct ports in my firewall. The bb documentation only states TCP 3101 but I have since read that the HTTP/SSL listen ports need to be open for the bb server so I have since opened up these. The strange thing is, my firewall logs show nothing passing through these ports.

I have run IEMSTest.exe on the bb server for both profiles and this was successful.

I have run bbsrtest.exe and this was successful:

Code:
C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Utility>bbsrpte
st.exe
NetworkAccessNode is srp.gb.blackberry.net.
Attempting to connect to srp.gb.blackberry.net (193.109.81.33), port 3101
Sending test packet
Waiting for response
Receiving response
Checking response
Successful
I am not sure what else I can check. The bb server shows "SRP Status: Connected".

Could it be a problem with the device/plan? It's on a data plan (BIS Works fine) but I wasn't sure if Enterprise Activation was something else.

I am determined to get this working so would really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Ben

Thank you for your response. I did start looking into this and was worried this may be the case. Do you think they will enable BES on a consumer account? I can't see what difference it makes to them??

Anyone got a direct number to people in Orange who would do this? Would rather not have to fight my way through normal customer services trying to explain the difference between BIS/BES etc.

Thanks,
Ben

Yep, rang 158 and just got put back through to normal consumer support.

They told me that BES is only available on their business contracts so looks like I will have to come up with some solution using BIS.

Thanks anyway,
Ben
