Default Question about UMA & 8900...

Please Login to Remove!

My 8900 is on its way and should be in my hands tomorrow. I'm new to UMA and there is one thing that I'm not clear on...

I understand the functionality of UMA where you can use WiFi connection as cell signal (improve call reception, get coverage in spotty areas like a garage, etc.)

My question is: Do I need to add anything to my existing tmo plan in order to use UMA and get "free minutes." I read that if you are connected via UMA and you're on a call, your plan minutes are now used. But on the other hand, I read how in order to not use your plan minutes when on UMA, you need to add an extra service to your plan in order to take advantage of this feature.

I went to TMO's website to look at additional services and I couldn't find anything on UMA/WiFi Calling...So now i'm just confused...

Thanks in advance!

I think you have it right as you described. The add-on plan is $9.99 monthly and its their "HotSpot" add-on service.

thanks for the clarification!

another question... is that a $9.99 per line rate? I'm on a family plan and wonder if the add-on covers all under the plan, or only the one line. My guess would be its a per line rate...

and another question... if I choose not to add the $9.99 unlimited hotspot calling, does it make sense for me to enable UMA on the 8900 when at home? My house has some spotty areas so it would be great to be able to use UMA at home as a "signal booster"

$9.99 per line.

UMA will still function over WiFi, but it will count against your minutes. This still helps if you get spotty coverage like it sounds like you're having.

uma always automatically connects to any of your saved wifi profiles when you come into range. so as long as you dont turn off wifi, as soon as you get to your house you will connect to your wifi and use uma.

You CAN force all voice calls to go over the mobile network only. I agree, there's no reason to do so.

With Hotspot at Home you get UMA calls free, but only from your home?

if you pay the $9.99 fee, you get free UMA calls from anywhere you get a WiFi signal.

Sorry but still a little confused.....so say I have unlimited nationwide plan and have no "hotspot" calling plan, will the 8900 still use UMA when connected to WIFI??????? Or would I need the "hotspot" plan for that to work?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

As long as you're able to access a WiFi network and connect to the internet, it can use UMA. If you don't have the $9.99 plan, it will count against your minutes.

OK, so since I have unlimited plan, no need for something else to get this to work...thank you for the reply.
