Default BES Setup Question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Everyone,

I have a question about setting up a Blackberry BES system in my office.

I will be purchasing 10 Blackberry 7100r's for the senior management in my company and plan to get a BES server in the office as well.

The reason I'm interested in our own BES server is because data security is a huge concern at my company. So if the BES server resides in my office, I don't have to worry as much about people stealing company information right?

Currently, our e-mail server is hosted by an external company so I'm thinking I will have to move my mail server to my office and then make it a BES server.

Would that be the best way to handle my situation?

If this is the best solution, can anyone recommend a good company (in the Greater Toronto Area) that could setup my current (off-site) e-mail server in my office as well as setup my BES server?

Thanks in advance!

I think you are fine with just running BES from your office location. Don't know what kind of wan connection it requies. As long as you have mapi access from your office to Exchange. You are golden.

Don't know of any hosting service but if you extra server services, you should consider getting a drive cage but not hosting service. You can throw everything in the cage. SBC or Sprint should have something for you.

Good luck.

It is "best" if Exchange and the BES are on the same network segment. Exchange is fairly chatty in terms of advising BES of new messages, etc. This is done via UDP and is less than 100% reliable if the connection has latency (> 35ms) or is saturated.

If the connection is poor, your users won't receive messages on a timely basis. The UDP notification will be lost and BES will have to pick up the message on a rescan.

Exclamation MAPI latency ( BES to Exchange > 35ms)

Does anybody know if it's possible to get MAPI to use TCP instead of UDP ?

Wouldn't this do away with the 'lost message notifications ' ??

The quick workaround is to move BB users to an Exchange server adjacent to the BES (<1 ms ping time) but if the user is in another site 240 miles away, their Outlook experience is harmed by doing this (especially if they try to open attachments)...

Any solutions to the BES->Exchange 35ms latency issue ?
