when I click into this without typing it brings up my impending calendar entries, recently dialled numbers and blackberry app world notifications. Is there anyway of customising what comes up here?

That's a feature of this stock theme and is not user-customizable. You can try a different theme, one with just he features you want. App World has a ton of themes and we have a theme sub-forum here on BlackBerryForums.
