What is your file free number at Options > Status?
With the device powered on, remove the battery and replace to reboot. Give it five minutes after reboot and check how sluggish?
What is your file free number now?

~9 MB file free on a 8310 is getting low... can cause sluggishness, along with whatever apps were running in the background, like an active browser page.

Is there a "magic bullet" solution?

Is there a universal "one click" way to end all of my apps that may be running in the background?

A battery pull will do that. There's no other way except to manually close each application when you're not using it.

dphenry, this topic has been discussed here quite a bit.
A battery pull will clear all running processes, which is why I advised you above to do so.
As noted above, also, alt + escape or Menu > Switch Application will show you what is running in the background.

If you gotta have a "one click" solution, you could always try QuickPull ;)

I know that address book and calendar don't need to be running in the background. You can go ahead and close those programs. BBM, home, messages, and phone log are ones that you cannot turn off. Not sure about the rest on your list.

The browser is always running, just make certain it is not on an active web page. Choose Menu > Close.
