Default Simple WIFI Question - make some sense of it for me please

Please Login to Remove!

Is it possible on say a 9000 Bold on the Fido network to have a setting that can be LEFT that will allow the phone to connect via WIFI as the preferred option when available for the following... (I do have a blackberry data plan but with WIFI available would prefer not to use it...)

(i) browser
(ii) all other data apps like yahoo, msn
(iii) email (probably not likely)

WITHOUT WIFI made simple whats the point of having it at all on the Berry - using it on the iPhone seems a breeze in comparison. Tried WiFIX by Aerize but couldnt get that to work either...

I do not have the option to go into the following and add Wifi Preferred - no such option ...

To change the Connection Preference options, complete the following steps:

On the Home screen, go to Options.
Select Mobile Network.
Select one of the following options:
Mobile Network Only
Mobile Network Preferred
Wi-Fi Only
Wi-Fi Preferred

Moved to a more appropriate section.

If you are now using a BB 9000, please update your profile to reflect the device and carrier. Thanks.

Some carriers are requiring a BB data plan to use WiFi in the newer model and OS 5. Basically, you cannot get the proper service books without the BB data plan.

Not sure if Rogers/Fido/Bell are among those, but I think they are. Someone using those carriers should be able to confirm or deny it.

You will ONLY ever see "connection preferred" on devices with UMA.
9000 does not have UMA.

Ok I updated my profile to say I have a 9000...

So - am I to assume that the 9000 implementation of WIFI is pretty much useless apart from a hotspot browser where you also have to manually select this in the Advanced - Browser option screen ??

And what about going to version 5.0 on Rogers / Fido - anyone have an idea whether this will make the WIFI option more 'real world'

I unsure what you are expecting.
If wi-fi is on, connected fully with BIS, then you will be able to surf the internet (using internet browser as that uses wi-fi OR carrier data), BBM, receive and send emails, and use any apps that are capable of using the wi-fi.
