How to replace 8330 Curve headphone jack?
Please Login to Remove!
Hi, in my other thread I detailed how my headphone jack suddenly stopped working and headphones no longer play any sound through them when plugged in. So I concluded that the headphone jack or its connections got damaged (God knows how; it must be pretty damn fragile to be broken from absolutely nothing at all).
So not having a warranty for my phone (Verizon will only fix parts if you bought a separate phone warranty from them at time of purchase correct?), I bought a replacement jack from CNN ( BlackBerry Curve 8300/8310/8320 OEM headphone jack- HTC, BenQ-Siemens, Acer, LG, Sony, Microsoft, Nokia, Apple, Panasonic, SonyErics) for 8300/10/20 (I would guess also for 8330...I hope). Now after searching the forums and YouTube, I cannot seem to find a write-up for how to replace the jack. I can easily disassemble the phone but have never gone as far as taking the screen out or further because I haven't had the need to; so I haven't gotten a good look at the jack area yet.
What does it take to do a replacement? Just switching some connectors? Soldering? Is there a write-up/video anywhere that someone can link me to? Any info on this whole process would be appreciated.

From looking at the image on the cnn.cn site, it looks like you'll be needing to desolder at least 5 contact points, then solder the new one in at the same 5 points.
Simply touching a soldering iron to the old jack's contacs MAY fix your problem, though. It could very well be that one or more of the joints has cracked free, thus rendering it inoperable.

Hmm, I see, that's what I will try first. Thanks
I wonder what to look for besides disconnected contacts since I don't know why the jack stopped working.
Anyone else with any info on this?

As an fyi, my 11-month-and-2-week-old Verizon 8830 headphone jack stopped working, and Verizon covered it under the 1 year warranty. It was a 5 minute call to their customer service number and painless. They shipped me a replacement 8830 overnight.
If you're still under the 1 year warranty period it's worth a shot to give them a call. Good luck.

Is that a 1 year warranty that I would've had to purchase separately when I bought the phone? Or is that a generic warranty covering all BBs gotten from VZW? I basically bought the Curve at retail price keeping my existing plan (and adding a BB plan) only 2 or so months ago.

no its a 1 year manufacturing warranty... meaning if you kept your receipt from when you bought it, bring it back to the store and they will replace it for you under that warranty

I would call C.S first, they are usually easier to work with, they can note your account and you should be able to go to a store, Verizon Store, and get a new one right away. 1-800-922-0204

So u called the company (not the actual store u got it from) and they just looked up your acct and took your word that it was broken and sent you a new phone overnight without u even having to send the original one in? How does that work? If I just brought the phone and receipt/box to any verizon store what will they do? Test the phone and then give me a brand new one right there? Do they take my original phone back??Please, more details...thanks!!

All I did was call the Cus Svc number listed above. No receipt necessary, no need to go into a store. They'll look up your record and date of purchase. If it's still under warranty, they'll ship you either a new one or a refurbished one most likely. They'll provide all the instructions and return packaging for you to return your broken one back to them. I think they give you 10 days to return it.
Also... don't worry about if they give you a refurb'd one vs. a new one. My replacement was refurbed and it looked like new. It was in better shape than the one I returned to them!

Yup they should not give you a problem as long as it's not abuse, any Verizon owned store. There is a chnace they won't have one in the store but it usually only takes about 2 business days to get Fed Exed out.

Hmm well I'd rather get one in person at the store and not a refurbished one. Do you have any say in this when the time comes? If you get the in-store new one, do they take the old phone back and do you need to have the box and accessories with you too?

You probably won't be able to get a new at a store... they normally do the replacements via mail.

okay called the number, the guy was quick and helpful and he's gonna have a refurb'ed one sent to me by wednesday at the latest with a return box for the old one. He said I'll be keeping the battery, the battery cover, and box/accessories and sending back the rest of the phone. Sounds good, but I just hope the refurb'ed phone isn't damaged or scratched in any way and that nothing goes wrong with it software-wise. Also, since it is not going to be in a Curve box, I hope nothing happens to it in shipping. It's definitely nerve-racking but hopefully it will go fine. Anymore encouraging words from anyone else who had to get a refurb?
Should I downgrade my phone back to 4.3 and erase anything else? Obviously I'll make a backup of everything and take my screen protector off, battery out, battery cover off, and memory card out.
Also, will any small signs of me having opened the phone before matter at all when sending it back? Like a missing screw, small marks in the case, etc...nothing major at all though.

Bb Repair Shop - Texas
If it is out of warranty, BB repair shop in Texas can fix it.... down to the component level... (and quick turnaround)

I get them all the time at work and they are fine. I have not had an out of box failure on any one refurb yet. In fact, I have had out of box failures on first run units that are shipped brand new. (8700's) The 8310 refurb should be fine...
Glad you are covered under warranty...
