Default Web Filtering for BES/BB Devices?

Please Login to Remove!

Our network management is beginning to look at possibility of web filtering/web reporting on our company blackberrys connected on our BES GroupWise 4.1.6. I'm aware that there are two internet browsers, the Blackberry browser and service provider browsers and that you can turn them on/off at the BES. Also, I'm aware that you can create an IT policy to use pull authorizations to grant/restrict specific web sites.

Basically, I'm trying to verify if there's any other tools to control, filter, and get reporting on browser activity for the devices? Aside from developing your own tools to accomplish these things, are there any good known third party web filtering tools that besides filter desktops (which we do here, but I'm not sure with what product) will also filter BES/blackberrys for a corporation?

If a third party filtering tool can also filter a company's BES/Blackberrys, what is needed to be done to make sure the web browsing traffic only flows through this software/firewall?

I've opened an incident with RIM, but the tech support person didn't seem to know too much besides what I know already.

Thanks

barracuda networks has a nice appliance.

you can setup proxy settings on BES to point to your proxy (barracuda)
Then lock down browser to BlackBerry only.

Problem is that all connections are from BESAdmin and no reporting can be done per user.

Maybe in BES 5 SP2 there will be more ways to do this.

Default Internet Browser

I haven' t verified this with our cell provider (VZW) but the impression I have is that if you take the opposite approach, and force all traffic through the internet( as opposed to blackberry)browser, that they (Cell Provider) can monitor traffic for each phone..I don't think they have the capability to selectively block traffic, but I do think they have a monitoring capability.
