My 8830 had a standby mode you could push, and would pretty much make it save energy and make the buttons unclickable. Is standby mode for the storm basically the lock button, or is there something else that would help in saving battery?

howzabout getting a case? im using the same leather case i was using for my curve and it fits/works fine... clips onto my belt, has the magnet in it that shuts off the screen, and has the magnetic flip piece to open/close the case. this thing is big and heavy, i cant imagine putting it into my pants pocket!
If you turn on key tones you'll notice the phone beeps like crazy while in your pocket, even though the screen doesn't light up. I've also noticed that the phone goes from low battery to radio off very quickly compared to my 8830.

Using it in my pocket or acase I kept activating the side buttons and killed my battery twice.
that may work for the screen but you could push the physical buttons in your pocket and it will turn the screen on killing your battery
I WANT MY STANDBY MODE BACK .... WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I completely agree I had my phone in my pocket at work for 6 hours and completely ran my battery down. I just sucked it up and bought a clip... not to big on the clip, but at least my battery doesn't die any more.

4.7.0.85 (and .83) improved the lock function so, if locked via the lock button, the screen will not come on with screen press at all. the only thing that brings the screen back from a manual lock-button lock is a physical button press, and even then you have to press the lock button to get to the unlock screen.
it's at least a step in the right direction...
i really dont see why they changed the mute button -> standby behavior...
