Releasing a BB PIN from network - slightly complicated

I bought a second hand BB 9700 from a mate in the UK. I got it unlocked and everything's working fine, except I can't set up email because when I go to my carrier's site it says the BB is registered to another network.
Is there any way around this. I tried calling his carrier but they say HE needs to phone them... he is reluctant to do this because the phone was malfunctioning so they sent him a new one but they never took back his original, which he sold to me, so he's worried about getting caught keeping the phone - even though they didn't take it back. Would they have any sway in this situation?
Could he register my email details on his server - even though my device is now on another network?
If he got a new blackberry, then he needs to go into his BIS account, use the "change device" function to enter his NEW blackberry PIN and IMEI.
This means he gets all his emails on his new blackberry, and it AUTOMATICALLY de-registers the OLD blackberry.

Ooh... this sounds promising. He did get a new BlackBerry, as far as I know. So I assume he registered the new one - thought he might have used an altogether new account. I shall ask. Thanks.
I am waiting to hear back from him. I'm hoping he'll just call them and ask to cancel the account... that doesn't imply he has the phone, at any rate. I tried them again and they insist they will only do it for the account holder.
